Online payments for council services made easier

Released: Friday, 03 November 2023

Residents and businesses in Adur and Worthing can now pay for council services online using Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Since 2019 we have been using the government’s GOV.UK Pay platform to accept online payments with credit and debit cards.

We now process over 6,000 card payments every month, but still receive thousands of phone calls from customers making payments. By enabling payments to be made by Apple Pay and Google Pay too, we are hoping to make transactions quicker and easier and reduce the need to call us.

The Benefits of Apple Pay and Google Pay:

  • Secure - your real card details are never stored or transferred and only you can authorise payment biometrically using fingerprint or facial recognition, so it’s a more secure way to pay.
  • Easier - there are no forms to fill in as all your information is played back from Apple Pay or Google Pay before you commit to the payment, making it easier to pay.
  • Quicker - the whole process takes a few seconds, so it’s much quicker to pay.
  • Reliable - you don’t have to retype any of your details, Apple or Google pass on your verified details, so it reduces errors.

Cllr Angus Dunn, Adur's deputy leader and executive member for resources, said:

“It is always important that we keep up with the expectations of residents and businesses. These additional payment options bring the everyday convenience that people are used to with online shopping, to how council invoices and charges are paid.”

Cllr John Turley, Worthing's cabinet member for resources, said:

“This work is an innovative step in improving the customer experience for our residents and businesses. This is just one example of digital transformation work to improve services that our creative rapid improvement team have implemented over the past year.”
